Children's Hospital of Los Angeles - Therapeutic Hypothermia After Pediatric Cardiac Arrest (THAPCA) Trials

Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria

Inclusion Criteria:
- CA requiring CPR (chest compressions) > 2 minute
- Age 2 d to <18 yr, GA>38wk
- Mechanical ventilation after CA
- CA not planned as part of surgical or other procedure

Exclusion Criteria:
- Parent/guardian does not speak English or Spanish
- No informed consent < 6 hr
- DNR status
- Terminal illness < 12 mon
- Good neuro status documented = (GCS-motor 5 or 6) Localizes pain or follows commands
- Receiving ECLS at time of arrest
- TBI or other severe trauma
- Active and severe bleeding or untreatable coagulopathy
- Newborns with recent birth HIE
- Location in NICU
- Prior CA > 2 min during hospitalization
- Second CA > 2 min before randomization
- EPI or NE > 2 mcg/kg/min at time of consent/randomization
- Ice water near drowning T < 32 C
- CNS Tumor with radiation or chemotx
- Progressive degenerative encephalopathy
- Loss of skin integrity
- Other misc (SCA (hx), cryoglobulinemia (hx), pregnancy(test), chronic hypothermia, another interventional study)
